  • The Dutchess County YMCA Strategic Plan '05 - '08

    The Dutchess County YMCA received a grant from the Dyson Foundation to engage the Council of Community Services of New York State, Inc. (CCSNYS) to provide professional support for the development of a strategic plan. A Strategic Planning Committee of the Y’s Board of Directors was established to guide the process and recommend a final report, with recommendations, to the Board of Directors.

    Information was collected through a number of sources including internal organizational and program data, trend data from the national YMCA, a confidential board survey, and community demographical data. In its deliberations of the information collected, the committee conducted a SWOT analysis (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats). This report outlines the findings of that analysis in terms of nine inter--related organizational areas and goals along with a measurable objectives associated with each goal. Also, presented are specific action strategies or plans as to how each objective will be accomplished, by whom and by when.


    1. Goal for Mission, Values, and Vision —To ensure that the mission, values, and vision of YMCA will be consistent and compatible with the future direction and interests of the corporation.

    Objective 1: The YMCA will embrace and act on a vision to guide its development over the next five years.

    2. Goal for Governance - The Board of Directors, working in partnership with the Executive Director, will to be fully, efficiently, and effectively engaged and accountable in advancing the YMCA’s mission, vision, and programs.

    Objective 2: Board governance for the YMCA will be the responsibility of a single board of directors.

    Objective 3: Significantly increase informed participation, engagement and accountability on the YMCA’s Board of Directors.

    Objective 4: The Board of Directors will have a working standing committee structure that will help ensure proper policy-making, monitoring and development.

    Objective 5: Integrate the Brookside Day Care Center into the administrative and corporate structure of the YMCA.

    3. Goal for Executive Leadership & Management — For YMCA to excel, as the organization grows in service, geographical locations and complexity, in executive leadership and management systems.

    Objective 6: The YMCA’s organizational infrastructure will evolve to efficiently and competently accommodate the growth of the YMCA.

    Objective 7: The YMCA will independently manage its financial affairs and do so in a manner that reflects the highest standards in fiduciary conduct.

    4. Goal for Human Resources - To have human resources policies and practices that attract, develop and retain an efficiently organized, well qualified, motivated, diverse, and competitively compensated staff, and will be conducive for development of a well-organized and highly capable volunteer capacity.

    Objective 7: Establish a comprehensive volunteer recruitment, internship, placement and supervision program.

    Objective 8: Establish a competitive compensation plan for current and future full time employees.

    Objective 9: Develop Brookside Day Care Center as a credentialed teaching facility.

    5. Goal for Membership & Program Services – To continually enhance the provision of quality, mission-based services that effectively address the foreseeable needs of county residents and significantly increase membership and member engagement with the YMCA.

    Objective 10: Establish and fully adhere to quality assurance standards with respect to all program activities.

    Objective 11: Develop a strong and responsive program capacity to serve the senior population.

    Objective 12: Significantly enhance teen programming in the valley.

    Objective 13: Develop a marketing plan to recruit, retain and inform members.

    Objective 14: Ensure that Brookside Day Care Center is serving at maximum capacity.

    6. Goal for Facilities – To possess quality, accessible, safe and affordable facilities in Poughkeepsie and Southern Dutchess County that will accommodate the YMCA’s growing administrative and program needs.

    Objective 16: Create a realistic vision and plan for the Poughkeepsie facility.

    7. Goal for Resource Development - To raise sufficient ongoing revenue to support the YMCA’s mission-vital services and multiple service facilities.

    Objective 17: Develop a three year fund development plan, including capital funds.

    Objective 18: Develop a public communications plan to ensure that there is an ongoing stream of positive information about the YMCA reaching county residents and potential donors.

    8. Goal for Strategic Collaborations and Alliances – To formalize sustainable relationships with colleague organizations and community partners that will further the mission and strategic goals of the YMCA.

    Objective 19: DEVELOP STRONGER TIES W/TOWNS AND CITIES. EXPECT PARTNERSHIP W/CITIES IN ORDER TO PROVIDE SERVICES.

    Objective 20: Advance the relationship with other nonprofit organizations in Dutchess County to where there is greater program and possibly administrative coordination & integration.
